chestnut leaf miner control by males to trap with pitcher and females with tree belt
Horse chestnut leaf miner will have several years of upheaval in public parks and the gardener. The leaves of horse chestnut trees have brown spots and lose their leaves early so they are miserably year after year and are in decline. The leaf miner has three generations per year with the first expected around mid-April, the second round in early July and the last round in early September. The moths are barely an inch tall and have a golden-brown color with some white bands. You can easily find the adult moths in the trunk of your horse. They are not the moths, but the larvae mine (= courses) which eat the leaves unsightly leaves and early leaf drop occurs. One can have severe leaf damage observed in May and June.

How to prevent horse chestnut trees in the early autumn leaves already massive losses from damage to the leaf miner?
Well into the fall as well as possible all the fallen leaves. Collect the affected leaves and dispose of it to a professional composting site. Pupae of the leaf miner, in this fallen leaves are present, so destroyed by composting.
Cleaning up fallen leaves in spring is less interesting. The leaves are already largely rotten, and pupae of the leaf miner attack site during massive clearance from the leaves on the ground. Then a clean-up obviously not benefited.
As early as possible after leaf drop affected leaves clean is the message!
Regularly we here in Flanders, faced with new pests. One example is certainly the tiny moth whose larvae leaves our horse chestnuts attack, “horse chestnut leaf miner” named (Cameraria ohridella).
By the larvae of paardekastanjemineermotten severely affected leaves from the chestnut or chestnut.
The tree stands in the summer and will be sad to let leaves fall prematurely.
Master the new generation of leaf miner, arising from the remaining population wintered pupae in the soil, by means of a specific pheromone trap in special cups
pitcher with bait to catch away kastanjemineermotten
Catch a cup which is inserted feromoonpil.
In order to catch the males, we use pheromones, which are insect sex attractants own natural. This pheromone is a specially designed trap which feromoonampule fit. This pheromone is simply hung in the crown. The attached ampoule attracts male moths to. This ampoule is to have every new generation of moths to be relocated. However, it is recommended that every 6 weeks (= duration of one ampoule), a new pheromone to apply: April 1 to 10 is a first time, half time around mid-May, third time late June-early July and a final time around mid-August.
Bottom of the pheromone is applied so soapy water attracted moths in the trap would drown. The translucent wall of the pheromone causes the situation on the ground can be monitored. There is a good follow up possible.
Important tip: the ampoule (a small brown rubber capsule) directly from the bag in the basket dropped and not with the hands. The ampoule was aware of “pheromone” and it would take you down there is already a great deal from it. Pheromones are natural substances created by insects in very low concentrations of the same species attract insects.
For humans, they are totally harmless. Is there still was contact, you should wash hands as soon as possible without touching the meantime other materials. If not then it hands over the pheromone distribution, with a worse catch in the trap itself as a result.
The female paardekastanjemineermotjes outwit us in a different way. They are not good fliers and drank some fluttering around. On the trunk they move a little jumping – leaping and fluttering. Combat these mineermotjes trailing along the trunk of a tree can glue bond. This high enough to prevent vandalism. A nice bonus side effect is that females already scavenged the lijmval itself also release pheromone, which attracts additional males.

By the capture of large numbers of moths does the population growth a lot slower, with a reduction in the percentage of affected leaves in the tree crown as a result. Biological control is rigorous. There is no time made any damage to the trees or the environment.
chestnut leaf miner in fighting the pitcher and bait
At the bottom of the pitcher you see the result in the soapy water: hundreds paardekastanjemineermotten who could not reproduce the leaves which the larvae can not affect.
By using specific pheromones to trap cups, with clearing in the autumn leaves, leaf damage is well under control. For example, the horse chestnuts in a normal way is to their photosynthesis (chlorophyll = transaction) to continue until late summer. The energy level of the tree remains stable, their vitality and improves disease resistance.
