Using forks, spades, rakes, and hoes

It is important that you handle the tools you purchase efficiently and well. When digging or lifting heavy weights in the garden, try to keep your hack as straight as possible and bend at the knees, to avoid putting extra strain on your spine.

All gardens need to be tilled at some stage. Soil that has not been cultivated for some time will need to be double dug that is, dug to two depths of the spade. You will also need to incorporate some bulky organic mailer into the soil it is best to use a fork for this.
Lighter digging known as single digging is usually done each autumn. This allows the gardener to turn over the soil and add more organic matter. Borders that are filled with herbaceous perennials may need to be partially tilled as old plants are removed or divided and new ones are added. Small border spades and forks are the best tools for completing this task.

When you are digging, make sure that you always work systematically in rows. The first row of removed soil will need to be moved to the end of the pint to I ill in the last row. You may find this task easier if you mark out the area that you plan to dig with garden twine. If you are digging over a reasonably large plot, you will be left with a lot of soil and it may be easier to use a wheelbarrow to transport the newly dug soil to its destination.


Digging creates better growing conditions for your plants and is the easiest and quickest method of creating a weed-free, fine layer of soil. Digging not only improves drainage, but it also opens up the soil to the air, allowing organic matter to break down more easily to release nutrients.
