Winter maintenance for plants

Winter maintenance tasks will depend on the severity of the local late and the kind of plants you grew. If you live in a marginal climate, which occasionally experience hard winters, you will probably be tempted to grow slightly tender plants, which will need some form of extra section during any cold snaps. If you are unsure whether your chosen plants are sufficiently hardy your climate, it is always wise to grow them in containers, since you can then wheel them indoors for a short period in winter, or at least mow them to a more sheltered spot during the worst of the weather. Otherwise, the best means of protecting your plants is to wrap the base of the plant (or the whole container, if it is housed in one) in burlap, or even the bubble wrap used for greenhouse insulation. This will provide at least some protection against the elements.
